Abstract

This study presents the poetry connected to the pilgrimage to Íusayn’s tomb, and presents a number of examples of ShÐÝite poems which evoke the pilgrimage and many of its features. The study ends with a conclusion in which we list all the results obtained in the various chapters of the study.

The most significant result of the present study has been to confirm the ShÐÝÐte fascination with the figure of Íusayn b. ÝAlÐ as shown by the many compositions, traditions and reflections which deal with the pilgrimage to his tomb in KarbalÁÞ. Íusayn is shown to command a central position in ancient and early ShÐÝite lore.

One significant conclusion of the study is that the figure of Íusayn as it appears in ShÐÝite sources did not arise of its own; it was shaped by ShiÝite denominational and religious factors which led to a sanctification of Íusayn, and to the ShÐÝite belief that he was the epitome of moral standing and a model of emulation. The genre of literature on the pilgrimage to Íusayn’s shrine is very productive until this day and new texts appear constantly.
