Ghassan Kanafani and the Dimensions of Suffering in “Men in the Sun”

Abstract
This study deals with the implications and dimensions of the various forms of suffering among Palestinian Arabs and the way this suffering is expressed in the work of the Palestinian writer, Ghassan Kanafani. Due to the entanglement of this subject, the study concentrates on the suffering of the Palestinians as revealed in Kanafani’s novel, “Men in the Sun”. Kanafani assumes that the suffering is essential to all stages of the social and political development of the Palestinian people. Portraying the suffering of the Palestinians under occupation, “Men in the Sun” is a novel which represents Palestinian suffering in its totality.
This study endeavors to examine the following questions:
Did Kanafani succeed in conveying the Palestinian suffering in this novel?
Did the artistic structure of “Men in the Sun”, with its various modern conventions such as characters, plot, language, etc…, help the author convey this suffering in a much more effective manner
