Abstract

I have chosen this play because I felt that Kanafani’s plays were marginalized by many writers. “Only a few writers have provided critiques on Kanafani’s plays” as Ibrahim Jabra says. The vast majority of writers have accounted for his stories and novels but not his plays. This research is divided into two parts ; the first part tries to prove that this play is actually an extension of Kanafani’s works but not a turning-point in his literary career, and the second, is actually a comparison between Kanafani’s “Al-bab” and Shakesppeares’ “Hamlet” through which I tried to compare between the main characters in the two plays, Hamlet and Shaddad.  The research also reveals that the process of understanding each play is to a large extent cultural-specific in spite of all the similarities between the two texts.
