Abstract
This paper examines the medieval love poem written in Arabic by the Jewish-Arab
poet Ibn Sahl al-Israeli, particularly, the implications of the theme of love in the
poem under consideration. The Israeli Ibn Sahel was considered a unique literary
phenomenon in Andalusia, as he wrote in Arabic and with Arabic meanings. Still,
using symbols and allegories, his poetry seems to conceal a perpetual nostalgia for
Jewish religion and Hebrew. As such, the paper will investigate Ibn Sahl alIsra’il’s poetry, between abstraction and allegory, especially the ‘Sophist allegory’
through which the poet employed the mask of Moses.
