“Outside the Orbit of the Self”: The Poet Salma Gobran: An Analytical Study

Abstract
This stylistic analytical study aims to examine "Outside the Orbit of the Self" by
the poet Salma Gobran. The poem is characterized by an internal contradiction and
a conflict between two times: the past with its exhausting burdens, and the present
with its determination and hope. It is evident that the poet has attempted to turn
against her previous romanticism and to create new orbits outside herself, a life
experience. Such experience, along with relying on her personal and religious
culture, in addition to being a talented wordsmith herself, have helped her enduring
this shift. In terms of musical composition, the poet preserves free verse while
creating a special musical hierarchy and new geometric visual formations,
consistent with the general direction of the poems’ contents, and the new situation
they have undergone. In terms of topics, Gibran committed herself to the love of
the homeland and to its causes until she became fully united with it, and it with
her. In the same context, she has advocated women’s rights addressing the culture
of shame and women’s oppression by motherhood. Still, she seems more solid and
daring in her stance, despite the delicate sense and the beauty of depicting the
scenes.
