Abstract

We live in a digital era with its technological revolution that includes all aspects of life. This imposes great challenges on creative writers, and leads to great changes in creative writing tools, as well as the relationship between the writer and the reader.

This study aims at examining how the contemporary Arabic novel benefits from the techniques of the expressive social media; especially through the language of the novel which is considered to be its core and main focus. In addition, language is also significant as it displays the internal world of the characters in the novel and reveals its emotions in an unlimited virtual world.

The Jordanian novelist Fadi Al- Mawwaj Khudair, in his 2016 novel A Virtual Female,  celebratedthe methods of social media in portraying and expressing the hidden meanings of both characters and receivers. The novel depicts, through its characters and action, the oppressed self in an imaginary visual world, while the female character is the main character whose miseries and oppression are depicted.

The novel is based on separate and detailed scenes which are connected to events that reflect the world of social media. The virtual space is apparent in the organization of the narrative, especially with the effective use of social media in the narrative language in narrating events.
