Abstract

This research paper aims to shed some light on the political upheavals that prevailed the poetry of a well-known Umayyad poet, Abu-Dahbal Al-Jumahi.  Three dimensions have appeared in his poetry: firstly, a mutiny against the ruling power for his rebellion comes as a reaction against the political mainstream culture of the Umayyad norms and standards; secondly, spatial and psychological alienation due to his poor living conditions for he is unable to change the conventional situation of the time, thus he puts himself in exile; and thirdly his tendency to what critics in general call "political flirtation" poetry, that aims to "flirt" with the Umayyad women not for the sake sensuality but for undermining and embarrassing the patriarchal Umayyad leaders.
