Abstract
Lately, we have been witnessing an ever increasing interest in the Internet for its vitality and importance in spreading knowledge and information and opening various channels of communication. The objective of this article is to provide a full picture of the Internet with fewer technical terms, in order to make it easier for the general public to become more knowledgeable of the Network, and to enable the professionals who have studied more deeply some aspects of the Internet services to see the whole picture within a proper context. The article surveys the nature and development of the Internet over the years, and the way the network functions to exchange information and carry out communication
