Abstract

Islamic legal laws are clearly stated to ensure that there be sound social ties among people and strictly forbid any act that weakens or threatens these ties. This research examines one of these negative acts, which often leads to hatred and dispute among members of the Muslim society. Getting engaged to a person who is already engaged is an act recommended against in Islam. Based on the traditions of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him), there is a clear recommendation against such act. Some Islamic doctrines and jurisprudents recommended against this type of engagement or even did not allow the marriage contracts, based on this engagement, to take effect. The article attempts to clarify the position of the various Islamic doctrines on this subject, which seems to affect the social ties and network of relationships within the Muslim society.
