Promoting Reading as a Tool for Social Change: Community-Based Initiatives in Literacy and Its Impact on Teachers and Students

Abstract

Free reading (unguided reading) plays a vital and decisive role in the formation of an individual’s personality. It polishes his/her intellectual and intellectual identity. It also contributes to his/her mental emotional, social and critical thinking development, alongside the enrichment of his/her knowledge, language and values. Furthermore, free reading improves efficient learning processes. However, in spite of the importance and value of reading, there has been a decline in the percentage of readers in the Arab-Palestinian communities inside Israel (Abu- ‘Asbeh, et al, 2013; Majadley, 2019; Mohammed, et al, 2018; Mohammed and Sawsan, 2015). This research has implemented field initiatives to promote literacy in the Arab-Palestinian communities in Israel and examined their influence. These initiatives have raised the percentages of readers and changed their attitudes towards reading. The research indicates that the promotion of literacy is a mechanism for communal change. Such change may lead to the development of the Arab-Palestinian communities based on the premise that literacy is the key to the progress of nations, societies, cultures and individuals. These initiatives, which were proved to be efficient in the promotion of reading and the improvement of literacy, can be utilized in a strategic plan for schools to adopt in order to change students’ attitude towards reading.
