Abstract

Numerical sense is one of the most eminent subjects emphasized in the new Mathematics Curriculum, 2006, particularly at the elementary stages. Emphasizing the importance of this subject is the direct result of the realization that pupils treat numbers and mathematical processes mechanically rather than logically and cognitively. Their approach does not show a real understanding of the numerical concepts or the mathematical processes. Undoubtedly, this is a deficiency which should be taken most seriously.

The Mathematics curriculum has provided some examples, which are dependent on the numerical sense in the various learning stages (specially the elementary stage). Yet, it did not deal with the subject in-depth. This subject has become worrying to many Mathematics teachers, who failed to grasp it, internalize it and apply it in the classroom.  This article presents a detailed explanation of numerical sense, discusses its meaning and provides some ways to help pupils grasp it better. It also deals with a number of issues which motivate the numerical sense among pupils.
