Abstract

More and more people are recently using online social networks. The
participation rate in online social networks among Arab teenagers is also increasing
every day.
The current research examines the use pattern of the social network, namely, the
website Facebook by Arab young students from middle and high schools in Israel.
The research is based on a survey that aims to map the variety of ways Arab
teenagers are using the website Facebook in respect to the following parameters:
frequency, language, interactivity, social relationships with different segments of
people; familiar people, strangers, similar or different age group, gender and
nationality. The used questionnaire was distributed to students from middle and
high schools located in different areas in the country.
The results of research show that students use the website Facebook at high
rates on daily basis and throughout the whole days of the week. It is also found that
the main use of Facebook is for entertainment and that there are differences
between the genders in relation to the way they use the website Facebook. It is
furthermore found that Arab young students communicate with strangers relatively
more compared to worldwide statistics as well as communicate with their teachers
but in a lower level. Generally, the Arab youngsters use the website Facebook in a
way that differs from the social norms of the Arab society.
