Abstract

This paper deals with a number of features of Classical Arabic which have nearly gone out of use, such as aÃdÁd (opposite meanings in one-and-the-same word), al-mushtarak (homonym), al-tarÁduf (synonym), al-ishtiqÁq (a kind of derivation), and more. Today such rare expressions are no longer in use, similarly to other linguistic features which were much more common in the past.

In the paper we discuss a number of linguistic features which, according to some scholars, were characteristic of Classical Arabic. We show that these features are no longer valid in the modern language, chiefly due to the fact that they tend to introduce ambiguity, while modern usage prefers clarity and intelligibility, so that the message is as lucid as possible
