Abstract

This study aims at presenting the possibility of maintaining a connection
between the perception of success and failure in mathematics and personal self-
esteem by students.
We propose the research hypothesis in which the heterogeneous class in terms
of achievement, students’ IQ, motivation may be heterogeneous in terms of
perception of success and failure concepts in mathematics. This perception is
related to students’ self-esteem.
It was found that in the heterogeneous class, students attribute success and
failure in mathematics to ability, effort, difficulty and the teacher role.
There is another different dimension in the heterogeneous class and that is the
conceptual perception of success and failure in mathematics. This fact verifies the
first hypothesis of the research. Different perceptions of these concepts and their
relationships with self-esteem provide support to the second hypothesis of the
research.
