Reasons of Spinsterhood from the Point view of al-Najah National University Students

Abstract
This study aims to find out the reasons of spinsterhood from the pointed view of Annajah National University students. The sample of this study consisted of (164) graduate
students registered in the first semester of the academic year (2015/2016). They were
selected randomly and represented around (15%) of study population, totaling (1100)
graduate students. For the purpose of this study spinsterhood scale was constructed and
used. Results indicate that there are many reasons of spinsterhood: high cost of dowries,
excessive ambition of husband and wife, social stigma related to some families, fear of
losing freedom after marriage, family problems, emotional failure and past losing
experiences. They further show that there is no significant differences in spinsterhood
reasons related to study variables: gender, age and marital status. Based on the results,
the researcher recommends social awareness increase with regard to the phenomenon of
spinsterhood to reduce its spread, construct social programs for populations which have
a high level of spinsterhood and conduct cognitive restructuring programs to change
thoughts toward high costs of dowries, ideal image of partner and family selection for a
life partner.
