Abstract

The aim of this study was to extend empirical knowledge on the impact of a couple’s
marital relations and their impact on the altruistic motivations of their offspring, by
exploring the connection between marital equality and the altruistic motivations of
adolescent offspring, and the extent to which such links are affected by religiosity
among secular, traditional, and observant Jews and Arabs,
The study population was 608 Arab and Jewish adolescents and their parents. The
data in the current study were collected using a self-report instrument.
Study findings indicate that altruistic motivations of offspring differ from parental
religiosity. Offspring of observant parents demonstrate greater motivations in
engaging in pro-social and altruistic behaviors compared to offspring of either
secular or traditional parents. However, increased parental marital equality is linked
to a greater increase in offspring’s altruistic motivations among secular parents
compared to offspring of observant or traditional parents. The findings appear to
point to the beginning of a new, important trend involving the connection between
marital equality and altruistic motivations of offspring, which affect pro-social
motivations in secular societies.
