Abstract

This paper discusses man’s attachment to place, specially his homeland. It
lays the theoretic base on which my PhD. dissertation was built. The
definition and explication of the main terms “exile” and “wandering” (al-
ghurba and al-tarahhul) are introduced. It also explores traditional elegy,
from which the Andalusian genre of “elegy for cities” originated. These
issues have a central role in the growing and development of yearning (al-
hanīn). In order to present the yearning and the importance of homeland in
the broad Spanish context, a variety of examples of this poetry of yearning is
presented. It alludes briefly to other contexts of people, who developed an
affinity to Andalusia. Examples are introduced of poets of the Othmānic
period, such as Mohammed Aqbal (1877-1938), who composed while in
exile yearning poems in Arabic and Urdu for places he used to live prior to
his exile.
The Hispano-Jewish (Ladino) poetry is not inferior to similar Arabic poetry
of the same subject in the 17 th -18 th centuries or the modern poetry of Federico
Garcia Lorca- the well-known Spanish poet (1898-1936) describing.
