The level of Scientific literacy among teachers of higher basic schools

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the level of scientific literacy of higher basic
school teachers in the Directorate of Education, south of Hebron. The study sample
consisted of 140 male and female teachers who were selected by using stratified
random sample to present (32%) of the study's population which consisted of (437)
female and male teachers in the second semester of the academic year 2012/2013.
The researcher used the test of scientific literacy. The validity and reliability of testing
were verified and achieved in appropriate ways. To achieve the purpose of the study,
means, standard deviations, independent T- test and one way ANOVA were used.
The results of the study were as the follows:
The level of scientific literacy of higher basic stage science teachers was moderate and
there were statistically significant difference at the level of significance (α ≤ 0.05)
between the means of scientific literacy of teachers due to specialization in favor of the
scientific stream and there were no statistically significant differences at the level of
significance (α ≤ 0.05) between the scientific literacy of teachers due to gender,
experience and qualifications.
In light of the results of the study, the researcher recommends holding workshops for
science teachers for the development of scientific literacy on the nature of science and
technology, the relationship of science to technology and linking that to the problems
and challenges facing the society. He urges teachers to develop their stocks of
knowledge and employ them in different life situations and conduct more studies on
scientific literacy in other areas.
