Abstract

In this research we studied the awareness of pre-service teachers of the various types of  teachers’ knowledge and compared this awareness in the first three years of the pre-service teachers’ learning. We also examined the pre-service teachers’ preferences regarding the importance of the various kinds of teachers’ knowledge according to Shulman. We found that there is a difference between the pre-service teachers’ in the different years of study regarding their awareness of the content knowledge and pedagogic content knowledge.

We found also that the pre-service teachers were aware of at most four kinds of teachers’ knowledge according to Shulman. The pre-service teachers mentioned another two types of teachers’ knowledge that they thought were needed for the mathematics teacher, general cultural knowledge and specific cultural knowledge for mathematics teaching. In this context cultural knowledge is considered more important in the eyes of pre-service teachers in their senior years than pre-service teachers in their first years.
